Our Story
Bridging the gap between athlete development and athlete experience.
In today’s competitive sport environment, athletes are often developing within systems that were not built with their full experience in mind. Across youth, high school, and collegiate sport, young people are expected to manage increasing levels of pressure, navigate performance demands, and define themselves through outcomes at a stage when they are still forming identity. At the same time, coaches are frequently asked to lead teams and shape culture without consistent access to training or support focused on athlete wellbeing. Parents are left trying to support their children through complex emotional and competitive experiences with limited guidance. And athletic programs and organizations are working hard to balance performance expectations with the growing need to prioritize culture, development, and wellbeing.
This disconnect is not the result of lack of care—it is the result of systems that have not evolved as quickly as the demands placed upon athletes and those who support them.
The Game Within Institute was created in response to that gap.
We exist to support the people who shape the athlete experience every day—athletes, coaches, parents, and sport organizations—by providing practical, research-informed strategies that strengthen both performance and wellbeing. Rather than choosing between development and results, we help programs build environments where both can exist together.
Because when athletes feel supported as people first, they are more engaged, more resilient, and more capable of reaching their full potential—on and off the field.

From my earliest memories to my professional roles today, sport has been a constant presence in my life. What first drew me in as a young athlete—the competition and the pursuit of excellence—has evolved into a much deeper appreciation for the community sport creates, the identity it shapes, and the lifelong lessons it can teach.
Today, as a Licensed Clinical Social Worker with specialized training in sport social work and a Professor of Social Work at Aurora University, I have dedicated my career to understanding how mental health, human development, and relationships shape the athlete experience. My work bridges clinical practice, higher education, coaching, and research, connecting what we know through research with what athletes and the people who support them need in everyday life.
Over the years, I have worked alongside athletes in the therapy room, coached young athletes on the field, prepared future clinicians in the classroom, and partnered with families navigating competitive sport. Through each of these experiences, I have witnessed firsthand the pressures athletes often carry. I've seen the confidence sport can build—and the emotional toll it can take when performance becomes more important than the person. Those experiences have shaped my commitment to helping create sport environments where athletes are supported as whole people.
My connection to sport is also deeply personal. Sport has shaped nearly every chapter of my life—not only my career, but my family and the way I understand growth, adversity, and leadership. As the daughter of a professional athlete, a former athlete myself, and now the parent of four young athletes, I have experienced the athlete journey from nearly every perspective. I've celebrated unforgettable victories, navigated disappointment, and witnessed how profoundly coaches, parents, teammates, and the culture surrounding a team influence a young person's experience. Those experiences have reinforced what both research and practice continue to demonstrate: athletes perform at their best when they feel supported, valued, and connected.
That belief inspired me to create The Game Within Institute.
The Game Within Institute was founded on a simple but powerful idea: developing better athletes begins with creating better athlete experiences. We partner with athletes, coaches, parents, schools, clubs, and organizations to build sport environments where performance and wellbeing grow together, allowing young people to thrive—not only as competitors, but as people.
Whether I am working one-on-one with an athlete, consulting with an athletic department, educating coaches, speaking with parents, or collaborating with youth sport organizations, my mission remains the same: to transform the athlete experience by equipping the people and systems that shape it. Because the greatest legacy of sport is not found in wins and championships, but in the confidence, character, and resilience young people carry with them long after the game ends.
